Borough President
Marty Markowitz has appointed Linda Sarsour, the 32-year-old Palestinian-American director of the Bay-Ridge-based Arab-American Assocation of New York, to local Community Board 10.
The appointment upset some local politicians and religious leaders, who accused Sarsour of being a Hamas sympathizer.
Markowitz and local civic activist Chip Cafiero defended Sarsour as an outstanding advocate for the Arab-American community.
Sarsour is the third Arab-American appointed to the 50-member board, joining pharmacist Habib Joudeh and the Reverend Khader El-Yateem.
