We held our second rally at the Green Church from noon to 2:00 on a cold, bright, windy March 1st.
About 50 neighborhood residents came out to show their support for the cause, some bringing along friends and family members. Several passers-by stopped to talk, gawk, take photos or grab a flyer.
It was encouraging to those of us who spent 2 hours carrying signs and chanting slogans on the corner that so many people driving through the intersection at Ovington and Fourth showed down and honked their horns in support, some flashing victory signs and cheering us on as they went by. It felt good to know that they understood what we were doing, and why.
The 68 sent a small detail that was unexpectedly called to action when one of the marchers, an elderly man -- a member of the congregation -- tripped and fell on the sidewalk during the rally. Thankfully, his injuries were minor and he was sent home to rest. A retired Methodist minister, he lives with his daughter and son-in-law, Dorcas and David Kimball, in the rowhouse adjoining the doomed Methodist parsonage -- rumored to be Number 1 on the congregation's "demolition hit list"
At a meeting at the Kimball's home after the rally, the group decided to hold another rally in two weeks' time. Details will be provided as they become available.
