Their Mission is Demolition

A letter from Jeannette Correa, a member of the Committee:

Dear Editor,

Green Church: Demolition v. Mission

It is a sad day for Bay Ridge when a church congregation has decided to demolish their own church.

The community cannot understand why the Bay Ridge United Methodist Congregation is not willing to seek a buyer who would save this Historic Church Landmark and allow 211 former members and pastors buried on the grounds to rest in peace.

The Pastor and Congregation are asking the community to help demolish the building by offering the green stones of this beautiful Church as mementos. I wonder what God would say, if he were here? The Congregation should be ashamed of itself.

Who among us would ever want to become a member of this Church? Would any of you enjoy spending Sunday service and bible study with a Church congregation that is about to destroy its history that began in 1830?

Why should the Methodist Congregation even bother to build another church? Will they ever be able to grow their congregation? They have made such awful and hurtful remarks in the local papers to the Bay Ridge Community.

I suggest that Bay Ridge residents seeking spiritual guidance should visit the Christ Church on Ridge Boulevard and the Bethlehem Lutheran Church on 4th and Ovington Avenues. These two Pastors are leaders in our community. They have taken the challenge to inspire and grow their congregations.
