Michael Behette Street Re-Naming

On Saturday, May 17 at 11 AM, Council Member Vinnie Gentile, joined by the FDNY, elected officials, family and friends, will host a ceremony renaming the corner of 85th Street and 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge "Michael Behette 9/11 Memorial Way", in honor of Bensonhurst firefighter Michael Behette (Ladder 172.)

When he heard the news that the World Trade Center had been attacked by two hijacked planes on the morning of 9/11/01, Michael Behette was on vacation in Florida. After rushing to the airport to fly home and finding every flight grounded, he rented a car and drove straight through to Ground Zero to join his fellow firefighters on the pile.

Like so many others who breathed the lethal dust from the pulverized towers, Michael was later diagnosed with lung cancer. He lost his battle on September 17, 2012, 11 years after 9/11.
