The New Bin on the Block

Curbside organic waste recycling began in Bay Ridge today as part of a pilot program by the NYC Department of Sanitation that will recycle food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard waste -- like lawn trimmings, rotted leaves and pulled weeds.

DSNY will pick up the recycled organic matter deposited in the brown bins being unloaded at right, and compost it, keeping it out of the city's waste stream and out of landfills by turning it into renewable energy (methane) or organic fertilizer.

Recycling organic matter could make a very big dent: organics make up about 30% of the city's residential and institutional waste stream.
