A Picture Postcard History of Bay Ridge

The most recent release in Arcadia Publishing's popular Postcard History Series is a collection of more than 200 vintage picture postcards of Bay Ridge assembled by local historian and author Matt Scarpa.

Bay Ridge, at the southwestern tip of Long Island along Lower New York Harbor, was once a small rural settlement. When the City of Brooklyn annexed the Township of New Utrecht, which included Bay Ridge, in 1894, the rural character of the place began to change dramatically.

Scarpa's collection includes postcards from the early 20th century -- many of them never-before published -- that provide unique and intimate glimpses of Bay Ridge as it emerged from rural isolation to become a thriving urban neighborhood.  The prints capture the picturesque beauty of Bay Ridge's once-rural landscapes, back roads and stately homes before the emergence of the mass transit systems that now connect the neighborhood to the rest of the city.

The collected images span the history of Bay Ridge from pre-European settlements to 1964, and include rare glimpses of illustrious figures with a Bay Ridge connection, like Henry C. Murphy, Robert E. Lee, Eliphalet W. Bliss, Teunis G. Bergen, Giovanni Da Verrazano and Henry Hudson.

You can buy the book at local indie bookstore The Bookmark Shoppe or order it from Arcadia Publishing by calling (888)-313-2665 or visiting the website. It is also available through big online retailers Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
