BAT Commuter Ferry Service Extended

In a media release today, City Council Member Vinnie Gentile announced that commuter ferry service from the Brooklyn Army Terminal, on the Bay Ridge-Sunset Park border, will be extended indefinitely beyond its current January 31 expiration date.

Gentile credited Mayor Bill de Blasio's team and the New York City Economic Development Corporation, working with his office, for the extension.

The BAT ferry, which gets commuters to Wall Street in just 15 minutes, has quickly become a fixture of the southwest Brooklyn transit network, Gentile said, bringing obvious quality-of-life benefits to the local community.

The ferry has become a transit lifeline for Bay Ridge/Sunset Park commuters who lost R train service into Manhattan last August in Hurricane Sandy's aftermath.

While the R train is out until at least October of this year, the BAT Ferry will fill the gap with a quick, reliable, affordable alternative, Gentile said.

According to the Home Reporter, the extension is only until the end of May.
