Reported Sale of 203 Ninth Street Alarms Preservationists

According to an e-mail blast from the Society of Old Brooklynites, the news, according to the former owner, that a developer has bought 203 Ninth Street, an abandoned industrial building next to a site being explored as a historic monument and public park, has set off alarms within the local preservation community.

The Gowanus neighborhood is under intense pressure from builders and investors, making every available property vulnerable to development, according to local preservationists.

As the neighborhood's low-rise buildings are replaced by high-rise, high-density residential development, environmental and quality-of-life issues like parks, schools, stores, street life, office space, small manufacturing and other core features must become the community's focus, preservationists said.
