Lucia Procession at First Free Evangelical Church

On Friday, December 13 from 4-5:30 PM, The Ridge Creative Center and the Scandinavian East Coast Museum, as part of "Santa Lucia and Scandinavian Christmas Traditions", will present a Santa Lucia Procession at the First Free Evangelical Church, 6501 6th Avenue in Bay Ridge, followed by Scandinavian crafts, cookie making, and refreshments.

The community is invited.

The per-person admission for the procession and refreshments is $5.00. The per-family admission fee of $25.00 includes the Lucia Procession, all children's activities, and refreshments.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

In Sweden, once a Catholic country, Lucia Fest is celebrated on December 13, the shortest day of the year in the Gregorian calendar.  Accordingly, the festival commemorates both darkness and light.

Because Santa Lucia was blinded for her faith, the Lucia, the oldest girl in her family, wears a red sash symbolizing martyrdom. As symbols of light, the Lucia wears a wreath of candles on her head and carries Lucia (saffron) buns representing the sun. She is followed by girls and boys dressed as star boys, bakers and a shepherd, singing in Swedish.
