The 187-year-old Fort Hamilton, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974, is one of the nation's oldest Army bases.
The Harbor Defense Museum, opened in 1980 and curated and directed by Richard Cox, is the only Army museum in New York City and the best source of historic materials about the fort. Its exhibits include displays of two centuries of historic arms and uniforms.
Admission to the museum, open 10 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday, is free of charge.
