For Red Hook, Losing LICH Would Double Trip to ER

According to a new analysis of hospital access from Sandy-ravaged Red Hook released by Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, this already under-served neighborhood could see the distance to the nearest emergency room double if Cobble Hill's Long Island College Hospital closes.

L.I.C.H. is roughly 1.5 miles from Red Hook.  The next-closest hospitals are New York Methodist Hospital, 2 miles away in Park Slope, and Brooklyn Hospital Center, 3 miles away in downtown Brooklyn.

Doubling the time and distance between Red Hook and the nearest hospitals would literally put people's lives -- including the nearly 7,000 people living in the Red Hook Houses -- at risk, de Blasio said.

With the doors at L.I.C.H. being kept open only by a temporary restraining order he secured, deBlasio, community groups, nurses and health care workers are due back in Brooklyn Supreme Court with their attorneys for a hearing tomorrow.

De Blasio has proposed creating a new Brooklyn Health Authority, to help its struggling neighborhood hospitals survive.  You can read the proposal here: http://advocate.nyc.gov/healthcare.
