|Sarah Rodriguez and Jessica Sparacio|
The essays submitted by winners Jessica Sparacio, from P.S./I.S. 229, and Sarah Rodriguez, from Sunset Park Prep, described their theater experience and interest in continuing their education in the performing arts.
Longtime NCT member Betty Karsh, who passed away last year, had requested donations to NCT in lieu of flowers. Her family and NCT chose to use the donated funds and form a scholarship for graduating 8th graders seeking to further their studies in theater, dance and the performing arts.
In her years as a performer and director with NCT, Karsh generously shared her talents and love of theater with children. The scholarship in her name is seen as a way of continuing her work.
The scholarship award criteria are distributed to local principals of schools up to grade 8 in late November-early December. A reminder or second letter follows in February-March, with applications and essays due in mid-May. The winner/s are chosen in time for the NCT's annual meeting in June.
The NCT seeks to grow the scholarship fund's endowment. To donate to the Betty Kash Memorial Scholarship, contact NCT@NCTheaterNY.com or visit the website.
