Junior Lowe Wins "B" Green Challenge

So far, about 25 enrollees have signed up for the ‘B’ Green Challenge, a joint Brooklyn small business energy efficiency promotion by National Grid, Barclay Center and the Brooklyn Nets.

Each month, participating businesses answer questions about the steps their business have taken to ‘B’ Green. And each month, the co-sponsors review the submissions and select a winner.

The winning business gets tickets to a Nets game or Barclays Center event, autographed Nets memorabilia, a plaque, and recognition on barclayscenter.com.

One-year-old Junior Lowe children’s clothing store, at 89 Atlantic Avenue between Hicks and Henry in Brooklyn Heights, has been selected as the first challenge winner.

Junior Lowe reduced energy consumption by sealing air leaks around doors and windows with weather stripping and installing a high-efficiency heating system, programmable thermostat, new plumbing, energy-efficient or light-emitting diode (LED) lights and UV-blocking window shades.

Junior Lowe owner John Lowe credited the ‘B ’Green Challenge with helping him find new ways to reduce the store's daily energy consumption.  He's taking similar steps at home.

To sign your Brooklyn small business up for the challenge, go to barclayscenter.com/bgreenchallenge. The first 100 businesses to register will get a free do-it-yourself energy efficiency aid -- a programmable thermostat, pipe insulation or weather stripping.
