Mermaids Seek Rescue

The Coney Island Mermaid Parade, the annual amateur burlesque extravaganza on the boardwalk, is in danger of being cancelled this year due to Hurricane Sandy.

Event organizer Dick Zigun, of Coney Island USA, estimates that, due to the cost of the Sandy cleanup, the parade will need to raise an additional $100,000 by June 1 in order to avoid cancellation.

The parade not only marks the official beginning of summer in Coney Island, it brings millions of tourist dollars to local small businesses.

To raise the necessary funds, the organizers will launch a Kickstarter campaign this week, and have mounted a fundraising website.  (More about the Kickstarter campaign on the website.)

The Mermaid Ball, historically the biggest fundraiser for the parade, isn't happening this year.

Coney Island USA, which hosts the Coney Island Museum and other local attractions, has been closed since the hurricane, its building destroyed and its revenues zeroed.
