Sandy: Praise for "New York's Strongest"

With the Sandy cleanup still in progress and storm debris collection continuing through December 31 in the hardest-hit neighborhoods, Council Member Vinnie Gentile, in a press release, commended "New York's Strongest" -- the 7,197 uniformed members of the NYC Department of Sanitation -- for the great job they're doing.

Bulky storm debris are still being picked up in Staten Island, south Queens and southern Brooklyn the day before regularly-scheduled garbage collection days. For example, if your scheduled pickup day is a Monday, storm debris need to be on the curb Saturday evening for Sunday morning collection.

Regular collection schedules will resume in all areas on January 2, 2013, with bulk items being collected on regularly-scheduled pickup days.

In Sandy's wake, "The Strongest" have collected nearly 350,000 tons of trash, fallen trees and debris from gutted homes and have bulldozed untold tons of sand off of city streets.
