Grimm's Legal Bills Top $500,000

As Politico reports, recently-re-elected Congressional Representative Michael Grimm, whose campaign finances are under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Dept. of Justice, has racked up more than $500,000 in legal fees to defense lawyers Patton Boggs.

Grimm, who can use campaign funds to cover legal bills for matters related to his official duties, had just $242,000 in cash on hand at the end of the most recent reporting period.

Federal investigators are probing Grimm’s relationship with Israeli citizen Ofer Biton, an associate of Israeli celebrity rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto.

Biton helped Grimm raise more than $500,000 in campaign donations from Pinto’s followers, allegedly including cash from people without green cards.

Biton, who said he asked Grimm for help getting a green card, was allegedly one of those people.

In August, the Justice Dept. charged Biton with immigration fraud and other violations. He is now free on a $1.5 million bond.

Pinto is under investigation by Israeli authorities in a bribery case.

The Grimm campaign maintains that the Conservative/Republican is not implicated in Biton’s legal problems and will be cleared.
