Lucia Festival, Scandinavian Christmas Market

Santa Lucia at Christ Church After School

On Thursday, December 13 at 3:30 PM, you're invited to a Santa Lucia celebration, presented by the students of Christ Church After School and the Scandinavian East Coast Museum, at 7301 Ridge Blvd. (73rd St. entrance) in Bay Ridge.

In Sweden, Lucia Day, a celebration of the triumph of light and faith over darkness, takes place each year on December 13, the shortest day of the year in the Gregorian calendar.

The girl chosen to represent St. Lucia, who must be her family's eldest daughter, wears a red sash, symbolizing martyrdom, and a wreath of candles on her head.  The saffron buns she carries represent the sun.  Following her is a procession of children dressed as star boys, bakers and a shepherd.

The Christ Church After School students have learned a Swedish song for the procession, which will be followed by cookie-making and traditional Christmas crafts projects.

There is no admission fee.
