Grappa from Red Hook

Artisanal Red Hook distillery Van Brunt Stillhouse has announced the release of Red Hook Grappa, made from New York grapes.

For as long as Italians and other Mediterranean immigrants have lived in New York City, they've been distilling grappa in their back yards and basements. Now, Van Brunt Stillhouse is bringing grappa to the city's stores and restaurants.

In its first release, Van Brunt Stillhouse will offer two varietals: one, made from a 2011 pressing, is a bold, earthy Merlot Grappa; the other is a festive, organically-grown Pinot Blanc from Lieb Cellars on the North Fork of Long Island.

The perfect way to finish a holiday meal, Red Hook Grappa will be in stores December 1.

Van Brunt Stillhouse is the dream of Daric Schlesselman, an editor at The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  He and his wife, architectural designer Sarah Ludington, live -- and want to stay -- in Red Hook.
