Gentile and Vallone: "Legalize Some Double-Parking"

According to an email blast from Council Member Vinnie Gentile, Brooklyn parents have reported encountering "double-parking ticketing blitzes" this fall during school drop-off and pick-up hours.

There's a difference, Gentile said, between parents pulling over to drop off their kids at school and double or triple-parked cars being left unattended on the street.  But the city's "whim-based" enforcement, he said, doesn’t discriminate between the two situations.

In 2010, Gentile and fellow City Council Member Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Astoria) introduced a “Double Parking” bill (Intro 281-2010) that would make it legal to double-park or stand temporarily while dropping off or picking up passengers, or while waiting for another driver to pull out so you can park.

If passed, the bill would cover the situation where a parent pulls over to pick up or let their kid off at school.
