The 33-year-old George, hired by the Manhattan DA's office right out of Hofstra Law in 2004, has logged assignments in the trial division's special narcotics and general criminal matters units, the narcotics gangs unit, and the homicide investigative unit.
George, who says the Brooklyn DA's job fits well with his resume, strongly criticized Hynes, slammed by the press lately for his handling of child sexual abuse cases in Brooklyn's Orthodox Jewish community, as more politician than prosecutor.
George also faulted Hynes for focusing too much on small-time, non-violent crimes like marijuana possession.
The 77-year-old Hynes, first elected in 1989, survived a primary challenge by John Sampson (now a State Senator) in a narrow 41%-37% split in 2005. Unopposed in 2009, Hynes has said he will run for re-election again next year.
Brooklyn native George, a first-generation American, was born in East New York to parents who grew up poor in India. His mother, a nurse, and his father, a hospital investigator, spent most of their working lives at Coney Island Hospital. First in their families to graduate from college, they came to the US in the 1970s looking for a better life for their kids, eventually buying a home in Sheepshead Bay.
George has said his vision is to reinvigorate and modernize the Brooklyn DA's office, after more than two decades of stagnation, to make it a more effective 21st century crime-fighting force; to restore the faith of the people of Brooklyn; and to pursue justice, not just votes.

Its time for a change. Way to many wrongful conviction came out of Charles Hynes' office. Prosecutors hide evidence which would help the defense and condone witnesses false testimony. Addicted addicts feigning for drugs will say anything for relief. Hynes abuses his power for his stats and to be re-elected. We need our justice system to be restored to a truth seeking system not a win, lose game.
