Salam Church Demolished

Salam Arabic Lutheran Church, at 345 Ovington Avenue between 3rd and 4th Avenues in Bay Ridge, was demolished today.

It will be replaced by a 5-story, 25-unit residential development.

The developer paid $1.5 million for the property.

Originally named Salem Danish Evangelical Lutheran, after a church in Copenhagen, Denmark, the building was designed by Danish architect Carl Jensen.

The Arab congregation that acquired the church in 1995 changed the name to Salam.

That congregation, which sold the church because it could no longer afford to maintain it, is sharing space at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, at 80th Street and Fourth Avenue in Bay Ridge.
