Bensonhurst Man Charged with Sexual Assault

William Giraldo, a 24-year-old Bensonhurst man has been charged with rape, sex abuse, robbery, assault and sexual misconduct in connection with one of a series of sexual assaults since March in Park Slope, Bay Ridge and Sunset Park.

Although Giraldo, who voluntarily came to the precinct house after cops released a surveillance video from a Dunkin' Donuts in Sunset Park, initially denied the assaults, he was charged after questioning and a series of lineups.

Police have been investigating a sexual assault spree that began in March, and includes an armed assault in Bay Ridge in May.

In the first three cases, the victims escaped and the assailant fled.

The first assault happened in Park Slope at around 11:30 PM on March 20, when the assailant followed a 24-year-old woman back to her 16th Street block from the Prospect Avenue R train station.  He grabbed her from behind, pushed her against an iron gate, ripped her leggings, and put his hands down the back of her pants.

Screaming and fighting, the woman was able to break free and the assailant ran away, pulling up his pants as he ran.

The incident was captured on a neighbor's surveillance video. That video was published by the Brooklyn Paper on April 23, a month after the incident took place, without detailing any related criminal investigation.

The Daily News, which had reported the incident the day before, on April 22, had also mentioned no criminal investigation.

Several days later, in a post to Park Slope Patch on April 26, local residents, alarmed by the bold attack, expressed disgust with the 72nd Precinct's failure to respond.

According to Bensonhurst news blog the Bean, the NYPD's delay in investigating the Park Slope assault has itself resulted in an internal investigation. Police initially declined to accept the surveillance video and closed the case, re-opening it only after a female detective interviewed the victim.

The sexual assault spree continued.

The second assault happened just before midnight on May 3, near Ridge Boulevard in Bay Ridge. The assailant pulled a knife on a woman and tried to force her into a driveway. She broke free and he ran away.

The third assault happened at 10:30 PM on May 29 near 55th Street in Sunset Park, when the assailant pushed a 22-year-old woman to the ground and tried to sexually assault her. She fought back and the assailant fled.

The fourth assault happened just before 3 AM in Sunset Park on Saturday morning, when the assailant, who had followed a 28-year-old woman home to her apartment building on 55th Street, raped her inside the vestibule of the building.

That woman picked Giraldo out of a lineup.

Giraldo was arraigned on Wednesday and held for lack of $100,000 cash bail.
